WIDELOAD'S SCX Honcho
Well folks, I thought it was about time i actually put up a thread on one of my rigs.
Most of you have seen the POS, 99% of those that have seen it have driven it.
It started life as a OG issue SCX10 (the one with the old chevy body). Ended up as one of the first rigs in QLD sporting a Honcho body.
Build list:
Wheel base has been stretched to approx 12"
r2J customs steel 4 link truss
Hand Bros 3 link
Proline Power stroke shocks all round.
Maximizer 1.9 beadlocks with either flat irons or Rock crusher X/T II's
EZ run 35a brushless speedy with 1200kv inrunner motor. (updated to CC Sidewinder SCT with HH 45t brushed motor)
3s lipos
Hardened diff gears front and rear (rear underdriven)
Junfac drive shafts
Steel front bar made by Bazuky
Winch
lights...blah blah blah...

Why would you underdrive the rear ?

Re: WIDELOAD'S SCX Honcho
Underdrive in the rear helps get rid of torque twist, helps on climbs and cuts down you turning circle. Does it enough to be noticeable.
I run it in my comp rig as well, but my comp rig is geared lower overall so its stock gearing rear/overdrive front, theres a few guys in the states that are running overdrive front/underdrive rear, they reckon its the ####.
The only time its a pain is when you reverse, it'll torque twist like a bitch.

Right then...i have never heard of this "underdrive" thingy.....Rizza you must have good eyesight to spot it in the pics,i can't see anything.
Where's the pics on the Moggy Troy.....we've seen the Honcho forever.

Holy crap...an update
Yes thats right, a update for the honcho..As we alll know its seen a crap load of wheel time in alot of peoples hands.
But since this thread its had a few minor changes and i though about time i put them up.
Electrics are now a Castle Sidewinder SCT & Homles Hobbies 45t.
Still on 3s, runs like a rabbit at the dog track and still crawls as smooth & slow as a snail.
Biggest & latest addition/upgrade is the new front bar made by Nathan (Bazuky).
Strong, light and looks sh!t hot. Made from 1.1mm sheet & 3/16 brake line. All mig welded and ground to be pretty much seamless.
Big thanks goes to Nathan for fabbing it up for me.

And with some stange green & silver jeep ...

Re: WIDELOAD'S SCX Honcho
Yeah i know its not much different but I liked the style of the first bar, so i didnt want to change it too much.
This one sits higher (winch on top of chassis rails, not between them) and also tucks in a little bit tighter to the body. Plus its boxed in underneath (spot the speed holes ) giving a bit of a skid plate and ALOT more strength...

ok I know its not tech talk here, but what and how does one harden a diff and what are the advantages, and what is underdrive?

If you try rubbing it fast it should get harder....depending on how long you rub it.

Doesnt worry me Jay, my thread is my thread...i'm happy to answer your questions.Jayboy74 wrote:ok I know its not tech talk here, but what and how does one harden a diff and what are the advantages, and what is underdrive
You cant acutally 'harden' your diff. But you can buy harden diff gears.
The hardened diff gears replace the stockers. They are machines from steel (not sintered (compressed powered) aluminium like the stock ones) so they mesh better and are A LOT stronger than the stockies. Think of them a bit like Cryo gears that you would buy for a 1:1 diff.
I explained the theory for under-drive a few posts above, but...
Under drive is exactly that. They are a lower (slower speed) ratio. Running a under-driven rear allows for better climbs, less torque twist and reduced turning circle as the front wheels turn faster pulling the nose up and around.
There are 3 different diff ratios that axial make: Stock(38/13)- 2.923:1, Over-drive(36/14)- 2.571:1 and Under-drive(43/13)- 3.307:1.
So you pair stock ratio up front with under-drive rear, overdrive front with stock rear...or if you really want to over-drive front with under-drive rear, but doing the last one (OD front, UD rear) can cause a few issues with binding as the difference between the ratios is pretty big.
Hope it explains it mate...

Re: WIDELOAD'S SCX Honcho
bit like turning a tank with tracks?
underdrive is the inside track, turning slower, overdrive is the outside track turning fast and allowing it to turn on a dime? Is that how i understand it.
Be preapred for me to pick your brains at the comp if you are going. I'm really interested in how a truck drives as opposed to how it looks, i'm not overly informative about diff ratios and gearing and really want to learn becuase i'm really into the theory of it may look good but how does she drive, I want to be able to gear up my rig to be able to handle all conditions, and i want to be able to get my rig to that status thusthe questions.
cheers,
Jase

Re: WIDELOAD'S SCX Honcho
over/under drive , means to under drive the rear or over drive the front
as to have the front dragging so to speak
major advantage on steep climbs because the rear wont lift the front wheels as easily
sweet work on the bar & to think nathan complainin how long ya took
did ya use the box & slice & slot so you can adjust it ?
did ya go some 2 or 3 mm for ya winch plate this time
you should see the plans for rd 3 ill be doin em up early next week
still nuttin out some fine points about penaltys & bonusses
all depends on final layout as the winch trucks have to winch themselves
as they have tracks for them only ,
set up thru the course .
alot of sections will see people havin to be snatched or winched thru
but if not theres a winch hill at the end to get all your team thru .
& its farkin wicked bud
remember that last down hill section before the race to the finish that punished alot of cars ,
well you know the wall on the otherside when you reach the bottom
yep theres a 8 ft wall of death to get up
some preety sick lines in your quarry bud ,
will be doin rd 4 up your way for shure
is that at the map you put up in nathans thread

Sort of, but not really about the tank track thing...Dont worry about picking my brain, everybody does it.Jayboy74 wrote:bit like turning a tank with tracks?

The mounts were all measured up when i drew the original template, so i didnt need slotted mounts. I just missed drilled one hole by about 1.5mm too high. So need slot it slightly to get all 4 bolts in. Its got 3 holding it at the moment and its staunch as ####.
All the plate in it is 1.1mm sheet, but its boxed into one solid piece...It aint moving...trust me.
Yeah the quarry near mine it pretty good, but its different style terrain. Its more slow technical stuff, not wide open...Wouldnt really suit the current style of comps we're running. Its better as just a social day.
The map i put up was for petrie dam/spill way. There is a thread with a map to the quarry near my place on here somewhere...

Axial...Integy also make them and they are pretty decent (scary for integy), but Axial's are pretty much the best.

They are still on ebay... search for "axial gear" or "axial bevel" and you'll bring them up.lunatick wrote:Unfortunately no one seems to have any in stock at the moment
The OD sets are getting impossible to find....I have heard quite a few rumours that Axial is discontinuing the gears. But its doesnt make any sense to me, as they've just release the Wraith which uses exactly the same diff internals as the ax/scx-10

Re: WIDELOAD'S SCX Honcho
you will be hard pressed to find the o/d gears, if you do get me a set no matter what they are worth haha, i ended up with under drive gearset to go in the rear of the honcho.
back to the thread, the bar looks real tidy, nice work boys.
